Proses Adaptasi Budaya Bagi Mahasiswa Perantau Di Palembang

Abstract

This study aims to understand the process of cultural adaptation experienced by migrant students in Palembang City. Cultural adaptation refers to an individual's ability to adjust to a new environment with different values, habits, and social systems from their original culture. This research employed a qualitative phenomenological approach, incorporating in-depth interviews with several migrant students who had studied for at least one semester in Palembang. Data were analysed using the interactive model of Miles & Huberman, which includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results indicate that migrant students undergo four stages of cultural adaptation: the honeymoon stage, culture shock, recovery, and adjustment. In the initial stage, students exhibit high enthusiasm for exploring the new environment, but later face challenges such as language barriers, social norms, and different cultural habits. Social support from peers and openness toward the local culture play a crucial role in facilitating the adaptation process. The study concludes that successful cultural adaptation is strongly influenced by self-openness, social support, and emotional regulation skills. Through this process, migrant students not only learn to adapt but also develop independence, responsibility, and tolerance toward cultural diversity.
